My Heart Belongs to Dada: Baroness Elsa von Freytag

I've recently become fascinated by the Baroness Elsa von Freytag, a Dada artist and poet who was a central artistic figure in Greenwich Village, NY during the nineteen-teens and twenties. The Baroness was known as an eccentric performer, and would often don strange costumes made of found objects or household items.

Attracted by the artistic scene, she found some work as a nude model for the Futurist and Expressionist painters, among them Marcel Duchamp, who appreciated her "lean masculine figure and gaunt ravaged face." She composed a poem in his honor, titled, "Marcel, Marcel, I Love You Like Hell, Marcel."

According to her autobiography, most of her art objects were produced out of other people's rubbish: sequins, buttons, bits of cloth, metal, and wood. The Baroness's sculpture also gained notoriety among the New York Dada movement. Even today, her work attracts comment [see this brief biographical source for more on her and her poetry].

A few years ago, Britney Murphy posed for an excellent editorial in the New York Times, posing as the Baroness Elsa Von Freytag...

Assemblage of miscellaneous objects in a wine glass: Configured as a bird of sorts with waxed-on peacock feathers and bristly tail (alluding to Duchamps frequent crossdressing). No longer extant.

A Single Charm Vintage Now Open on Etsy!

My Etsy Vintage Shop, A Single Charm Vintage, is now open!! After much wavering and pro/con list-making, I've decided to take the dive. It is still small, but I will be adding more and more, so stay tuned. Right now, I am focusing on accessories from the 60's-90's. I will decide in the near future whether or not to add clothing items. Take a look, let me know what you think, and enjoy! Also, if there are particular kinds of items that are of interest to you or that you would like me to keep an eye out for, let me know! There will be more items going up this week [including a gorgeous vintage Bakelite jewelry set], so come back...here is a preview:

Virtual Shopping at Topshop, NYC

Not to harp all week on Topshop and Kate Moss, but I just can't help doing some virtual shopping [that is, online window shopping] of the new line released today. I am sitting here imagining the insanity of the NYC store at this very moment and feeling simultaneously happy and a bit regretful not to be there amidst the madness. Kate's line is even more amazing than I expected [and more pricey!]. Of course, I am drawn to her flapper-inspired pieces, but she also has a range of other goodies: Liberty prints, flowy bohemian dresses, 80s-inspired body-con numbers, and lots of ruffles and sequins!! Here are five of my favorites, all with a 20's theme:
