Next Stop: Rabbit Hole

This week has been altogether crap-tastic, if you ask me. The holidays are over and real life has started again. I have a student in the class I am teaching who seems unable to hide his disgust at having to be there {and tripping me up during lectures when I catch him rolling his eyes}. And the situation in Haiti is saddening and terrible. It's times like this that I feel a little like falling down a rabbit hole and getting lost somewhere for a while...

::On the upside {and speaking of rabbit holes} Alice in Wonderland comes out in March.

  1. Hooray for all things Alice! I've always loved Carroll's work so adding Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena B. Carter, Matt Lucas as the Tweedle twins and my lord and savior, Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat. How will I make it till March?!

  2. Darling, I'm sorry to hear you're feeling down at the moment - but I understand it. If you find that rabbit hole, do let me know, please?

Perhaps you could write a post about what to do to feel better when one is gloomy - it might make you think of better things, and I'm sure the other desolate people out there will appreciate it!

And as for that annoying bastard student (pardon my language, but those kind of people really annoy me!), I say you should simply fire back: look fantastic and know what you're talking about, and if you catch him rolling his eyes again, just stare at him for a full minute until he feels properly ashamed. You might want to throw in a small do-you-really-think-pathetic-little-you-can-upset-me-smile while you're at it. And then go back to teaching the other, probably nice, people in your class, and ignore him thoroughly for the rest of the lecture.

Or you could simply confront him (probably easier said than done, but I know you can do it!) and ask him if he has a problem with your classes, because you're getting rather tired of him constantly showing signs of displeasure while you're trying to teach him something. You're the one doing him a favour, after all, and he should show you the respect you deserve.

  3. Tara, Hello Agin! Sorry to hear that you had such a bad week. Regarding your eye-rolling student: I feel your pain. It seems like phenomena like that are more and more frequent occurances in classes. I too always have problems just brushing it off, so I've just started calling them out. I just got the worst set of course evaluations I have ever gotten from my Brit. Lit. Survey course. I've never seen such vitriol and personal hatred expressed in evaluations before! Well, I guess that means I at least touched a nerve!

Hang in there, at least you have the MJP to look forward to ;)

  10. Everyone -- thanks so much for your lovely, supportive comments! Things are fine now, and I'm feeling much more confident that this week will be a good one ;) All of your kind/funny words made me smile. I still wouldn't mind finding a rabbit hole though...just for a change of scenery! Hugs and Kisses...xoxo.
